Banco Sabadell continues with its consolidated sustainability strategy by launching the first sustainable synthetic securitisation on a €1.1 billion portfolio of loans to projects mostly related to renewable energies (project finance). Of the portfolio’s total volume, the Institution placed the 10% junior tranche, equivalent to €110 million, among institutional investors.

With this green securitisation, the Bank keeps boosting new lending and commits itself to financing operations linked to renewable energies for the amount of the transaction (€110 million). Moreover, the securitisation enables the Bank to transfer the risk and optimise capital.

It is worth noting that up to 78% of the assets hedged under this transaction are related to structured finance of renewable energy projects, mainly solar, wind and PV. Furthermore, through this operation, the Bank has the opportunity to release capital to keep boosting investment in renewable energies.

"We are proud to have successfully completed a transaction that we have been working on since the beginning of this year. Without a doubt, this securitisation is another step in the right direction, i.e. funding projects that drive the transition to a greener and more sustainable economy," said Sergio Palavecino, Head of Financial Management at Banco Sabadell.

Sabadell’s Commitment to Sustainability

Banco Sabadell has a sound and consolidated sustainability strategy, embodied in “Sabadell’s Commitment to Sustainability”, an ESG framework for action that contains more than 60 objectives. The Institution has proposed allocating €65 billion in sustainable financing solutions in five years, having already allocated more than €40 billion. Through the issuance of its own and customers’ sustainability bonds, it has accumulated more than €12.1 billion until the end of 2023. In addition, in the past year, more than 45% of medium and long-term financing for companies has been sustainable.

As regards renewable energies, Banco Sabadell has more than 25 years of experience in investing and financing projects in this sector. Since its pioneering foray into renewable energy project finance in 1992, the Bank has been a market leader. Since 2018, it has financed close to 200 operations in this industry.

In parallel, through its subsidiary Sinia Renovables, the Group continues to invest in renewable energy and sustainability projects, exploring new technologies and offering comprehensive solutions that boost trust and long-term commitment.
