• Carlos Bastarreche, the Spanish ambassador to the United Kingdom, gave the award to Josep Oliu, Chairman of Banco Sabadell, at an event held in London attended by representatives of the business sector from both Spain and the UK.

This afternoon the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain has granted the Annual Golden Award to Banco Sabadell as the Spanish entity whose achievements in the United Kingdom in 2016 have been particularly significant. The award ceremony took place at the Spanish Embassy in London. The event was attended by Carlos Bastarreche, the Spanish ambassador to the United Kingdom, as well as multiple representatives from the business sectors in both countries.

The United Kingdom has always played an important role in the history and development of Banco Sabadell. In 1978 the UK was the first market outside of Spain in which Sabadell chose to be present. In 2015 Banco Sabadell significantly strengthened its presence in the UK with the acquisition of TSB from Lloyds Banking Group. This acquisition represented an important step forward in Sabadell’s internationalisation process.

Today, TSB has 587 branches, more than 8,000 employees and 5 million customers. In 2016, which marked 1 full year since the acqusition of TSB, the latter successfully fulfilled the objectives of its three strategic pillars: to provide great banking to more people, to help more people to borrow well and to provide the type of banking people want and deserve. Furthermore, last year TSB was also voted as the best British high street bank. During 2017, one of the bank’s principal objectives is to complete the technology migration process of TSB.

By awarding Banco Sabadell the Annual Golden Award, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britiain recognises the trajectory and the commitment of Banco Sabadell to the United Kingdom, whilst also valuing the bank’s contribution to building business relationships between the Spanish and British markets. Josep Oliu, Chairman of Banco Sabadell, has thanked the Chamber of Commerce for this award, and highlighted the important role of the British market in the bank’s internationalisation process.
