Sabadell’s Carles Abarca wins the Alan Turing Prize awarded to the sector’s most prestigious Information Technology professionals

The jury valued the success of his leadership in the establishment of the bank’s technology strategy.

The Catalan Association of Telecommunications Engineers (Telecos.cat) and the Catalonia Official School of IT Engineering, awarded the Alan Turing Prize to Carles Abarca,  Banco Sabadell´s Technology and Centralised Administration Director,. The prize was presented yesterday evening, during the holding of the 20th Night of Telecommunications and Information Technology, which brought together the most prestigious professionals in the IT Sector and was also attended by the Vice-President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Joana Ortega, and the Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias.

The jury, which was made up of professionals and authorities of acknowledged standing, chose to highlight the career and leadership of Carles Abarca, in view of his successful introduction of the bank’s technological strategy, which has, over the last few years, had to deal with a constant process of transformation, involving the integration of banking entities, the implementation of new financial services, desktop virtualisation, mobile apps start ups and the development of social networks, among other merits.

Carles Abarca graduated in Telecommunications from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, holds a Master in Business Administration, from the Sloan Business School - MIT, in Boston, as well as a Master in Electronic Business from the University of Stanford California. He joined Banco Sabadell in 2007, as CTO (Chief Technology Officer) subsequently being promoted to the position of CIO (Chief Information Officer), a post that he held until Summer 2014. Since then he has taken on overall responsibility for Technology and Centralised Administration at the bank.
